14 – Divine Mother’s Motorcycle
Sometime after Mukunda had been graduated from high school, his father bought him a motorcycle with a sidecar. Mukunda used to ride in it with his master, Swami Sri Yukteswarji. On many days they would go riding through the city, laughing merrily as the breeze filled their clothing, making it flap around their bodies as though with kindred enthusiasm.
Mukunda was indeed pleased with his motorcycle; it was one of the most delightful things he had ever owned. One day he parked it on the street in front of his home. Later, leaving the house, he saw a man, a casual acquaintance, gazing at the vehicle admiringly.
Mukunda smiled. “Isn’t it a beautiful motorcycle”?
“Oh, yes,” the man replied warmly. “If only I could have one like it!”
“Take it, then. It’s yours.”
“But-but. . . “ the man faltered, “for how much?”
“No, take it. I’m giving it to you.” Mukunda looked at him kindly.
“Do you mean it?” The man was incredulous. “How can anyone give away such a valuable thing?”
“Of course I mean it. I couldn’t enjoy it any more, knowing that you want it. I shall be much pleased if you will accept it.” He added, “Just wait a minute. I’ll get you the pink slip of ownership.” He re-entered his home and soon returned with the pink slip.
The man hardly knew how to express his gratitude. His eyes bore eloquent testimony, however, to his heart’s feeling.
“Mukunda felt a divine content. “I own nothing, beloved Mother Divine,” he thought happily. “All these things You have lent me for my use. But they belong to You, and so I given them freely to You when I see You wanting them through the hearts of others.”
